More often than not, from natural
perspective, humans are not keen to accepting defeat, especially when an issue
at stake involves fierce competition in terms of power, status, human sap and
financial drain by stakeholders. Such state of affairs is often associated with
the game of politics which for years has continue to serve individuals, groups
and nations on the part of destruction through such deadly means like:
assassination, thuggery, kidnapping and ultimate rejection of election result
which often gives augment to violent and war. Indeed, such a grave situation
has been propellants in developing economies of the Middle East, Latin America
and African countries especially Nigeria where anti-democratic forces has been
finding it way.
Such an obsess genes were shattered
about two month ago where the incumbent President Dr.
Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in a watershed manner to
the bewilderment of all Nigerians, home, in the Diaspora and the world at
large; congratulated his rival, General Muhamadu Buhari
in the presidential election ahead of INEC’s official declaration of Buhari as
the winner of the 28th March, 2015 election. To Nigerians in
particular and the entire world, President Jonathan unsolicited humanistic
gesture is a triumph of democratic maturity of himself, Nigerians and also
Africa. Indeed, President Jonathan unprecedented congratulatory initiative on
the victory of the presidential rival, General Buhari
is a great lesson in a seminal democracy in Nigeria and Africa, are part of
those uncommon charismatic leadership of the President; by his rare gesticulation
of seeing nothing absolutely wrong in conceding election victory to his rival.
President Jonathan diffused any expected violent which would have engulfed
Nigeria in the variety of war by now and that would fulfilled the negative
prediction by the Director of African Royal Society Mr.
Richard Daudin , a guess lecturer at the Golden Jubilee of Nigeria’s
independent and that of United State Of America that Nigeria was bound to disintegrate
by 2015.

Since God knows best, these prophets
of doom have failed woefully. The out-going President wonderful and exemplary
congratulatory message to the president elect, General
Buhari, President Jonathan said “I have
kept my word on free, fair and credible pool as I have always affirmed;
nobody’s ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian. The unity, stability and
progress of our dear country is more important than any thing else”. Such a
pregnant philosophical statement deeply demonstrates the humanity of President
Jonathan right from birth.
John
Roskin has observed in
his statement that “I believe that the first test of a truly great man is
humility”.

In general, President
Jonathan’s
overwhelming gesture of placing core emphasis on Nigeria’s natural interest by
taking democracy to the highest level for the first time in Nigeria née Africa
through a seminal congratulatory message to his rival at the presidential
election, warmly demonstrate his fundamental conquest over human natural
amassment in the state of nature. Such a rare gesture also demonstrate President Jonathan’s indebt knowledge of democracy
which a political analyst says, its based on the conviction that man has the
moral and intellectual capacity as well as the inalienable right to govern
himself with reason and justice.
Indeed, President Goodluck Jonathan’s triumph and democratic mellowness
for Nigeria is also based on Aristotelian concept of democracy which arose from
“man thinking that if they are equal in any respect they are equal absolutely”,
as well as the unyielding view express by Alfred Isman
that all ills of democracy can be cured by more democracy; another observer
viewed that democracy is liberty plus (+) economic security. The proceeding
quantum of democratic knowledge exercised by our ebullient President Jonathan which actually prompted him to congratulate
General Buhari on his victory as the Nigeria’s
president elect coaly justifies President Jonathan
as a role model in democracy scholarship.

Thus, the anticipation for African
leaders to pick up and demonstrate the same passion, the same disposition and
the same sportsmanship in the game of politics of which democracy is the
baseline for national survival. Farewell PGEJ as
you takes over your new office and continues to inspire young politicians on
peaceful democratic conduct in Nigeria, Africa and the world al large.
