#phones are one of the fastest adopted innovations in the history. Today, findings have revealed that computer, internet and mobile phones have become important parts of human life and that the latest of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), mobile phones, have become widespread in most parts of the world, especially among the young generation. 
 
Statistically, young people constitute a greater percentage of mobile phone users in the world. 
The integral roles play by mobile phones in the life of students, especially undergraduate students cannot be underscored. Mobile phones enhance students’ urge for communication which include sending and receiving of text messages and making and receiving of phone calls to parents, guardians and love ones. 
It’s when majority of students are wondering when their roommates will be back to the room, whether they are given assignments or there is a fixed class and other odd moments that they find a good time to pick up their phones to text or call. 
 
 But sure bet of all students do with their phones is chatting. Students chat very well even if they don’t have anything informative to exchange at that moment. 
In Journalism and mass communication for instance, mobile phones are used as portable (pocket) media devices and services. With internet enabled phones like Smartphones, students can know what is happening around the world and can make happenings around them known worldwide within seconds. 
 
 Mass communication students can equally convert their sophisticated phones to recording audio and audio-visual gadgets. They package, write and report events as they are. 
Generally speaking, with mobile phones, students can access online materials related to their area of disciplines. They can browse for other informative, fascinating and tantalizing sites, events, programmes, social-cultural and religiously inclined stuffs and watch videos both online and offline with them. 
 
In other words, students can surf the Net with their Internet enabled mobile phones. Across the board, students with Smartphones can use social media Apps which include Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, 2go, Badoo, Tumbir among others. This is so because Social Network Site owners have tailored their offerings to fit mobile crowds. 
 
With features like location, tagging, picture upload, personal profile update and status updates, students can use their phone to broadcast who they are, where they are and what they are doing to all their friends and the entire public or users of a social networking site they can access at any 
point in time. 
 
To this end, students can easily get carried away in the euphoria of using these mobile phones and if care is not taken, they can be detrimental to student’s academic pursuits. The Global #Slavery Index 2014 announced on Monday that India and Pakistan alone account for over 45% of total global enslaved population and have highest prevalence of modern slavery in Asia. 
 
LONDON: With over 14.2 million in India being involved in forced labour and being victims of trafficking - for sexual exploitation and forced marriage, the country is home to the largest number of people trapped in modern slavery. Globally, 35.8 million people are enslaved across the world. Of them, 23.5 million people are in Asia, two-thirds of global total in 2014 (65.8%). 
 
The Global Slavery Index 2014 announced on Monday that India and Pakistan alone account for over 45% of total global enslaved population and have highest prevalence of modern slavery in Asia. 
The Index said, "Particularly in countries such as India and Pakistan, nationals - often including entire families - are enslaved through bonded labour in construction, agriculture, brick making, garment factories and manufacturing." 
The report this year found 23% more people across the world are involved in modern slavery than previous estimated. 
 
Modern slavery exists in all 167 countries with five countries accounting for 61% of the world's population living in modern slavery. 
The 2014 Global Slavery Index (GSI) has been published by the Walk Free Foundation, a global human rights organization with a mission to end modern slavery in a generation. 
The report looks at prevalence (the percentage of a country's population that is enslaved) as well as the total number of people living in modern slavery in each country. 
It estimates that over 23.5 million people in Asia are living in modern slavery. This is equivalent to almost two-thirds of the global total number of people enslaved. Of these, over 14.2 million are in India and over 2.05 million are in Pakistan, which demonstrate the highest prevalence of modern slavery in Asia (1.141% and 1.13% of their populations respectively). 
In South Asia, these countries are followed in prevalence by Nepal (0.823% of the population, 228,700 people), Bangladesh (0.435%, 680,900), Afghanistan (0.435, 132,800) and Sri Lanka (0.359%, 73,600). 
 
"Some countries with the biggest challenges are also taking important steps to tackle the problem. India for example has strengthened its criminal justice framework through legislative amendments and has established 215 Anti- Human Trafficking Police Units. Much more needs to be done," said the global report. 
Commenting on the report's findings, Andrew Forrest, chairman of Walk Free Foundation, said: "There is an assumption that slavery is an issue from a bygone era. Or that it only exists in countries ravaged by war and poverty. These findings show that modern slavery exists in every country. We are all responsible for the most appalling situations where modern slavery exists and the desperate misery it brings upon our fellow human beings. The first step in eradicating slavery is to measure it. And with that critical information, we must all come together - governments, businesses and civil society - to finally bring an end to the most severe form of exploitation." 
 
Mauritania has the highest proportion (prevalence) of its population in modern slavery, at 4%, followed by Uzbekistan (3.97%), Haiti (2.3%), Qatar (1.36%) and India (1.14%). 
Iceland and Luxembourg have the lowest number of people enslaved in both prevalence and in absolute numbers, estimated at less than 100 each, closely followed by Ireland with under 300. 
 
Modern slavery involves one person possessing or controlling another person in such as a way as to significantly deprive that person of their individual liberty, with the intention of exploiting that person through their use, management, profit, transfer or disposal. 
Modern slavery contributes to the production of at least 122 goods from 58 countries worldwide. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates the illicit profits of forced labour to be $150 billion a year. 
 
Danglingreport says, "India's modern slavery challenges are immense. Across India's population of over 1.2 billion people, all forms of modern slavery, including inter-generational bonded labour, trafficking for sexual exploitation and forced marriage, exist. Evidence suggests that members of lower castes and tribes, religious minorities and migrant workers are disproportionately affected by modern slavery. Modern slavery occurs in brick kilns, carpet weaving, embroidery and other textile manufacturing, forced prostitution, agriculture, domestic servitude, mining, and organised begging rings. labour is particularly prevalent throughout India with families enslaved for generations." 
 
"There are reports of women and children from India being recruited with promises of non-existent jobs and later sold for sexual exploitation, or forced into sham marriages. In some religious groups, pre-pubescent girls are sold for sexual servitude in temples. Recent reports suggest that one child goes missing every eight minutes; it is feared that some are sold into forced begging, domestic work, and commercial sexual exploitation." 
According to the report, on paper, criminal justice reforms specific to human trafficking are the strongest component of India's response to modern slavery. 
 
 In 2013, the government amended the Indian Penal code to include specific anti-trafficking provisions. In 2014, the government expanded the number of police anti-human trafficking units across the country to 215 units, aiming to establish a unit in 650 districts. 
The judiciary and over 20,000 law enforcement have received training on victim identification, the new legal framework, and victim-centered investigations. 
The report says: "Dalits have the least social protections and are highly vulnerable to severe forms of exploitation and modern slavery. Approximately 90 percent of India's labourers are in the informal economy."</div>

Letter to Nigerian Government on Economic System, Bring back our Parliamentary System

Sir: Parliamentary system of government is one in which a Prime #Minister is the head of government and the President is the Head of State, but is usually ceremonial. The Prime Minister is chosen by party not directly by the people. In Britain for example, the Queen/King is the Head of State, while the Prime Minister is chosen by the party that wins the majority of the votes or through coalition and when the system of governance is active and running, a temporary cabinet is set and aside by the opposition party that will monitor the political leaders, should anything go wrong! From either the Prime Minister, the Ministers, then the temporary cabinet takes over the government. 
 
Until the January 1966 coup, Nigeria was practising parliamentary system of government. Nnamdi Azikwe was the president, while Tafawa Balewa was the first and only Prime Minister Nigeria ever had. It was the coup de tat by renegade Nigerian Military officers that jettisoned the effectual system that led us from Parliamentary to Presidential System. 
Unlike presidential, parliamentary system of government is less costly as the Prime Minister and other ministers are part-time workers. The government is answerable to the congress unlike in presidential (in Nigeria), where resolution of the National Assembly is useless. The parliamentary system is more suitable for multi-cultured countries like Nigeria, where regions can back a party based on their tribal and regional inclination. 
 
Nigeria is a country where tribal, regional and partisan sentiments surpass nationalism and patriotism. A tribal chauvinist is more honoured than a nationalist. If Nigeria’s inclination is through tribal sentiments, then the parliamentary system is better for Nigeria. 
 
If the Parliamentary system will not be allowed to return, then why can’t Nigeria adopt the Swiss style of government? In Swiss style, the parliament will chose many people from the major tribes (in the case of Nigeria) or from regions; each person will govern the country for a year and then will step down and become a minister till all the chosen candidates do their single year term before they are replaced with other people. 
 
 In Swiss style, the ultimate power rests with the National Assembly. 
Nigeria needs a better system of government. This federal style is not working; it only favours the looters and undermines the will of the people. 
The National Assembly should, through a referendum, bring back our parliamentary system or adopt the Swiss style. Either of the two will go a long way in solving the crisis of regional, tribal and sectarian struggles for leadership in Nigeria.</div>

A tragic political state. Nigeria’s nightmare

•Human life has become the #country’s cheapest commodity 
It is truly ironic that, at a time when Nigeria has been formally acknowledged as the most valuable economy in Africa, the worth of human life within it has become so cheap. Even the most patriotic of its citizens can recognise the growing indifference to increasing incidents of serious injury and mass loss of life. 
 
There are remote and immediate causes for this ongoing tragedy. Principal among them are the chaos and destruction of the civil war, the subsequent diffusion of small arms and the consequent rise in armed robbery and violent crime. There is also the problem of weak and ineffective institutions which make the resort to self-help more attractive. In addition, the rise of dictatorial military regimes and their authoritarian civilian counterparts have combined to ensure that Nigeria is a country in which the ends always justify the means, regardless of how violent those means may be. 
 
More recently, the cheapness of human life has been aggravated by the cruelty of the militant Islamic groups like Boko Haram whose putative campaign for an Islamic state has been characterised by cold-blooded acts of mass murder. 
 
 Ever since its renewed campaign of terror began in May 2011, the country has witnessed assassination, bombings, armed attacks and abductions on a regular basis. Places of worship, markets and bus stations have been bombed; civilians have been slaughtered; girls and young women have been abducted. 
Perhaps the most egress demonstration of the reprehensible tactics of the insurgents is the deliberate targeting of male students as seen in Gujba, Mamudo, Buni-Yadi, and most recently, in Potiskum, where a suicide bomber detonated a backpack full of explosives at a school assembly. Fifty-two students died and 79 were injured. A despondent people and a terrified nation seem to passively await the next atrocity, only praying that it will not affect them directly. 
 
(N/B) The situation is worsened by the lack of responsiveness of the Federal Government which seems to have restricted itself to the perfunctory issuance of statements of condemnation and sympathy. 
 
 While those are necessary, it is obvious that they are inadequate, especially when government’s own actions blatantly contradict such pious sentiments. 
 
When over 200 girls were abducted in Chibok, Borno State, the Jonathan administration took two weeks to respond officially, even in the throes of global outrage. Government officials floated the kite that there had been no abductions at all. That was followed by the amazing request that all demands for the return of the girls be addressed to the terrorists who took them, rather than the administration. 
 
Then there was the First Lady’s infamous summoning and interrogation of officials in connection with the abductions. Till today, President Jonathan has refused to visit Chibok, and only had audience with the parents of the abducted girls at the behest of Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani activist. 
 
In April, the president danced openly at a political rally in Kano, less than a day after nearly 100 Nigerians lost their lives in a car-bomb explosion in Nyanya on the outskirts of Abuja. Last week, he went ahead with his formal declaration to contest a second term just 24 hours after the devastation in Potiskum. 
 
As leader of the Nigerian state, President Jonathan must understand that he is more than a mere politician and should act accordingly. When a president engages in partisan politicking hours after terrorist attacks, when he continually gives excuses for failing to act, when he blames others for his own ineffectiveness, he conveys the message that his administration cannot care less about the most fundamental of its duties towards the citizenry – ensuring the security of their lives and property. Such attitudes only serve to ensure that human lives remain the country’s cheapest commodity.</div>

‘How I and Soyinka set up Pyrates Confraternity’ – 82 yr old Prof. Awe reveals

The Pyrates #Confraternity, which later metamorphosed into cultism in universities was founded by seven prominent Nigerians back in their days as undergraduate students at the University of Ibadan in 1953. It was the brain child of Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, who got 6 of his friends – Nat Oyelola, Sylvanus Egbuche, Pius Olehi, AIG Imokhuede, Ralph Okwara and Prof. Bolanle Awe, involved. Prof. Awe, who is now a pastor at Fullness of Christ Evangelical Ministry (FOCEM) in Ibadan explains how it all started… 
 
The idea was conceived by Wole himself, at least I know he was the one who talked to me. I don’t know who spoke to the other five members but we actually assembled at Teeder Hall, the second hall to be completed after Melamby. We assembled in the basement and just made merry in the evening. We were just out to be different and I saw it to be fun. None of us envisaged that we were laying the foundation of a virulent cult in that 1953/54 session, though the association insisted that it was in 1952 hence they celebrated their 50 years in 2002. At that basement we had something to drink, nothing potent, we went around the campus in unusual ways, we were well known and there was nothing like secret oath, nothing spiritual about it all. 
 
You earlier said people doubted your new life because of what you have dipped your hands into. What were these things? 
I am one of those who founded Pyrates Confraternity (PC) and I am one of those who maintained that though PC which transformed to National Association of Seadogs (NAS) truly dissociated itself from PC on campuses, it can not really separate itself from it. This was the basis of the attack of Prof. Wole Soyinka on me at their 50th anniversary where he gave an 18-page lecture, where substantial part of it was an attack on me and my ministry. That only showed me that his camp noted that someone has left them. In fact, I have just finished writing a reply to him on that. 
My attitude is that whatever we may say today, it was the idea of PC that gave rise to these virulent cults. Even though we were not violent when we started it and we didn’t call it cult, but the cult culture began after when we started. Today, they still recognise we the founders as the Magnificent 7! The NAS does not want to agree with that. Though they decreed that no PC should not exist on campuses, but we all know that they still do. The fact is if they say they have no link to the ones on the campuses, I’ll be prepared to accept that but to say they don’t exist on campuses, I disagreed and we parted ways on that. 
 
At the time you started, what was the criteria used to recruit members 
It was solely based on friendship. My own interpretation was that at the appropriate time, Satan hijacked what we started since we didn’t know where we were going. 
 
What were the creed of the association? 
I wrote it somewhere I can not locate now. I think they were to abolish convention, revive the age of chivalry (where you show deference to the weaker s*x) etc. In any case I can’t remember anything that we did to promote those creeds. The motto was; Orders Is Orders. Also, Wole did not stay long enough because he left a year after for Leeds, because he wanted to study English honours which was not available as a course in Ibadan then. I think Ralph Opara took over from him as the head. But I stayed till 1956 when I left for Britain. Three of us Wole, me and Pius Olehie, who formed the PC, were from the same class in Government College, Ibadan while Ralph Opara was a year before us. 
 
So when would you say Pyrates Confraternity became virulent?<img height="123" src="https://scontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/10639565_668066973307193_5318888589242441883_n.jpg?efg=eyJvbGF0IjoxNjB9&oh=7f4b45295781efa557451dcff9d4e66d&oe=551B7141" width="200" /> 
I think by the 1980s. The thing is that at the beginning, there was only PC and so many people struggled to be a member because it was a prestigious thing. When I returned from Britain, some students who wanted to become members needed a lecturer to sponsor their membership, those who came to me got my nod. 
Up till about 1972, PC was the only association, but when there was schism over one of them who violated the law and he was not ready to subject himself to discipline, he left and started a rival organisation and that was how the Buccaneers Confraternity started. About the same time, Eye Confraternity started. You must not also forget that violence was become rife in the society. This began in Ibadan with Operation Wetie around 1964/ 65. Things became intolerable until the coup in 1967. 
Violence became the order of the day and it crept into PC by the time, I had become disenchanted with the club and was ready to leave. Some of the PC members had their vision beclouded by violence and the old PC decided to form National Association of Seadogs and went ahead to register it at the Corporate Affairs. They said PC should no longer exist on campuses but there is a difference between saying and establishing it. 
So the whole thing between Wole and I was the inability to establish what they proposed, and so other groups began to spring up in various universities using the name Pyrates Confraternity because nobody has any right on the name. This is the problem between Wole and I. 
 
At what point did you renounce your membership? 
I must say that I did not officially renounce until I became a Christian. I kept being less a nd less active because I kept seeing it as an activity for children and younger people. But when I became born-again and established this ministry, I consciously went to God and confess that we were the people who started this thing, which has become something we did not envisage. I asked Him to forgive me and forgive the rest of us and I confessed on behalf of others too. That is the only time I’ll say I renounced it. It was a private thing. 
 
Have you done that publicly? 
No, I have not bothered but I’ve told all who are concerned that I’m no longer one of them. At any public opportunity, I always say it and they know that I am no longer one of them. If Wole could take the trouble to attack me in an 18-page report, then I know it has registered that I am no longer one of them. 
 
Did they make any effort to ask you why you were leaving? 
No, we did not bond ourselves to be members forever. I think when they found out that I stopped turning up for their meetings that must have convinced them that I was no longer interested. But I didn’t make any statement concerning them until I started this ministry and got involved in the University as chairman of Anti-cultism Campaign Committee. 
 
Did you take the cultism to a higher level like joining the Ogboni, as people believe it happens? 
As I said, I was only active in it between 1953 and 1957after which I left for Britain. When I came back in 1960, I was on the staff of the University and was just an adviser to them. I didn’t know what they did at their services (meetings) I didn’t know when the oath taking, etc started or if it was actually done. However, I know it is done today. This is what the Seadogs pretend not to know. 
 
Have you spoken about Christ to Wole Soyinka? 
I have not but I will certainly welcome the opportunity. The only problem I envisage is that unless God softens Wole’s heart, it might be difficult to speak with him on Christ.</div>

I will not offer myself again for election into the office of president.” Buhari was persuaded to break this pledge because Bola Tinubu made him an offer he could not refuse. He would merge his ACN party with Buhari’s CPC party. Tinubu’s putative South-West strength would be combined with Buhari’s mythical North-West supremacy. The result of this alchemy would be politically unstoppable: next stop Aso Rock! 
However, this plan started to unravel soon after the marriage and the honeymoon. Overwhelmingly, Nigerian public opinion rejected the idea of a Muslim/Muslim presidential ticket; effectively short-circuiting all delusions of a dream Buhari/Tinubu ticket. With APC’s nerve-wracking loss in its presumed stronghold of Ekiti, and with it only able to eke out a victory in its Osun backyard, and with Mimiko’s defection in Ondo bringing that state back to the ambit of the PDP, Tinubu’s much-vaunted strength in the South-West became more fiction than fact. 
Fourth coming of Buhari 
If the door was slammed shut to a possible vice-presidency, Tinubu still has the plan B of nominating a disciple as Buhari’s vice-presidential running-mate. 
 
 Thus, when Buhari finally declared his candidature for president for a marathon fourth time at Eagle Square, Abuja, Tinubu’s ACN brigadiers were there in full regalia to give him conspicuous moral support. The wily Asiwaju himself was absent, perhaps in order to seem an honest broker among the APC presidential gladiators. Nevertheless, he was suitably represented by his Senator wife, Oluremi Tinubu. Other ACN timber and caliber, including Babatunde Fashola of Lagos, were also in attendance. 
However, rather than crate an unstoppable momentum, Buhari’s formal declaration only seemed to have concentrated minds about his chances. 
 
 The prognosis was inauspicious. There would be no good luck in Buhari’s fourth outing. The man is simply politically unelectable as Nigeria’s president. Some of his turn-coat political allies always feared this. For example, Nasir El-Rufai, who now virtually operates as Buhari’s “chief of staff,” observed just a few years back that Buhari remains “perpetually unelectable” as a result of his “insensitivity to Nigeria’s diversity and his parochial focus.” 
Buhari’s declared candidacy re-awakened old angst about his cynical political antecedents, and it made many reappraise his chances more realistically, now that his candidature was beyond conjecture. The conclusion remains the same. Buhari has die-hard Hausa-Fulani support in the North. But he has even more dyed-in-the-wool opposition in most other parts of the federation. His core Northern support is unlikely to translate yet again to victory at the centre, even with the promissory note of Tinubu’s fading ACN support in the South-West. 
Back to the supermarket 
Any right-thinking person knows that Buhari is not the type of man to allow Tinubu to become the king behind his presidential throne. Therefore, it did not take long for the Tinubu mafia to start shopping for a new candidate with much less political baggage than Buhari. 
 
Indeed, the writing is on the wall that they are now more than likely to ditch Buhari in order to pitch their tent with some other, more malleable, APC presidential hopeful. 
One likely choice is embattled Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, who finally announced his divorce from the PDP this month, after committing adultery with the opposition for the better part of four years. Tambuwal had his eyes on the position of Governor of Sokoto State. 
 
But in a dramatic turnaround, he has now been persuaded to pick up the nomination form for the APC presidential contest. 
Suddenly, the Tinubu brigadiers are now saying Buhari is too old to be president. Indeed, if elected, he would be Nigeria’s oldest president at 73. If he runs successfully for two terms, he would still be president at 81. The question-mark of Buhari’s age was hardly a hidden secret until now. It is just that, in the treacherous terrain of Nigerian politics, it provides a ready-made excuse for ditching him. 
Fashola, who was there to support Buhari at his Eagle Square declaration, now says what Nigeria needs are young leaders and not geriatrics: “When 40-year olds are now leading nations and our 40-year olds can’t even get to the Senate, they can’t even become governors. 
 
Are we really preparing this generation for the future? Those are the issues really. We cannot point to success in other countries and refuse to do what those people are doing to get things right.” This is a coded way of saying Buhari is now way too old for Aso Rock. 
 
Machiavellian politics 
Politics is a treacherous business. Buhari should know this by now. He himself was treacherous in being part of a gang of military officers that seized power illegally from a democratically-elected government through the barrel of a gun. He was then, in turn, treacherously overthrown by his own mates. Buhari should know he is dealing with politicians seasoned in betrayal. Indeed, duplicity is the stuff politics and politicians are made of. In politics, everybody stabs everybody in the back. Therefore, everybody should expect to be stabbed in the back. 
Asked if he would back Buhari if Buhari wins the nomination for the APC ticket, Atiku told everyone he would easily stab Buhari in the back; without seeming to realise it. He said: “I think I have proved that I am a pragmatic politician. Recall that in 2010 when I failed to get the PDP ticket against President Jonathan, I and others went to try to bring about an electoral alliance between the CPC and ACN.” Atiku’s “pragmatism” is the stuff of treachery. He failed in the PDP so he promptly switched to create an alliance between two other opposition parties. The bell tolls for the APC. 
 
Nuhu Ribadu, as EFCC chairman, named Bola Tinubu as public enemy number one. But then he turned around to become the anointed presidential candidate of Tinubu’s ACN party. This did not prevent Tinubu from stabbing him in the back. Tinubu entered into a last minute deal with Buhari of the CPC. Then again, he entered into another suspected backroom deal with Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP. But there was payback time for Ribadu. 
 
Ribadu was part of the APC merger. But then he chose his time to ditch Tinubu and the APC for the PDP. 
Some of us have long maintained that Buhari is a political neophyte. We have had cause to warn him that nobody wins the nomination of a political party like the APC, laden with corrupt politicians; by saying he will fight corruption if elected. Buhari’s anti-corruption hyperbole is part of what is responsible for the buyers-remorse his presidential bid is already experiencing. 
Pocket infrastructure 
Without the backing of the Tinubu brigade, Buhari does not have a prayer in getting the APC ticket. His lack of political know-how is going to be a major handicap. He is up against people like Atiku Abubakar; seasoned wheeler-dealer politicians who know how to arm-twist convention delegates. Buhari, on the other hand, has never had to fight to get a party’s nomination. Instead, parties have been formed around his presidential ambitions. 
Atiku, in particular, has haggled and wrangled through many nomination conventions since the early 1990s. Moreover, he has a war-chest of naira bank-notes with which to grease the process. But Buhari, the man who claims he had to take a bank loan in order to buy the APC presidential nomination papers, is going to have a difficult time convincing APC delegates to pitch their tent with him without providing pocket infrastructure. 
 
 Buhari’s approach is not the realistic way to run for president in today’s federal republic of Nigeria. 
The imminent ditching of Buhari by Tinubu means the forthcoming APC convention to choose the party’s presidential candidate is going to be a bloodbath. It is really going to be ugly. There will be dead bodies strewn all over the convention floor. Dogs and baboons will surely be soaked in blood. With its do-or-die politicians fighting to finish on the eve of the February elections, the APC will soon provide a textbook case of how not to campaign against an established party like the PDP in Nigeria. 
Buhari’s talakawa supporters, who caused mayhem when he lost the last presidential election, will not take kindly to his likely defeat at the APC primaries. If Buhari is rejected, he would be humiliated. It would have been better for him not to have run. Don’t buy all the pious talk that the losers will support the winner; it is not going to happen. Even if Buhari were to decide to be diplomatic about his defeat, his incendiary supporters don’t have the word diplomacy in their vocabulary. 
 
Catch-22 
The APC is caught in a Catch-22. If it fields Buhari, it will fail at the polls under the weight of his previous political bag and baggage. If it rejects Buhari, all reliance on his mystical 12 million votes will go up in smoke. Tambuwal, Kwankwaso or Atiku cannot replicate those votes. They have neither Buhari’s hype nor his charisma. With Buhari out of the reckoning, many of his disgruntled supporters would rather riot than vote. The APC itself would implode under the weight of its own internal contradictions. This is the anti-climax to all the hue and cry about the 2015 election that is now in the cards. 
The ditching of Buhari would open a clear pathway for Atiku; the politician’s politician and Aminu Tambuwal, the dark horse. Atiku’s dismal performance in previous polls is eloquent testimony that his presidential hopes are a pie in the sky. Tambuwal in the APC ticket would be even worse than the last showing of Nuhu Ribadu of the ACN, who was even better-known nationally than Tambuwal.</div>

For long, #Nigeria wavered precariously between weakness and total failure. With Jonathan leading the party of lootocrats and do nothings, the report card is in; Nigeria is a failed state. It hasn’t collapsed yet but its collapse is a matter of time if the current trends are sustained. 
 
A failed state is generally perceived as a nation that has failed at fulfilling the basic conditions and responsibilities of a sovereign government; and are characterized by social, political, and economic failure. 
 
Nigeria is a state consumed by anomie and internal violence, it can no longer deliver positive political goods to Nigerians. The government of Goodluck Jonathan has lost legitimacy among a growing plurality of Nigerians, and the country is facing severe infrastructural deficit and economic stagnation. 
 
The Fund for Peace, in their landmark initiative, outlined several social, economic and political indicators that characterizes a failed state. 
 
No doubt Nigeria is one. The country is in a maelstrom of internal conflict and power games as orchestrated by the home-grown terror network of Boko Haram. 
According to Robert I. Rotberg in his book – When States Fail: Causes and Consequences; “There is a hierarchy of political goods. None is as critical as the supply of security, especially human security.” Nigeria as a nation today cannot provide security for its citizens. The military has been politicized, corrupted and decimated by cronyism. 
 
A once proud military with acclaimed exploits in international peace keeping efforts is now a camp of deserters and cowards. No one should blame the troops. A fish they say decays from the head. 
The problem with the Nigerian military is with the ranking leaders not the troops. It is a country where citizens are expected to make their private security arrangements, groups in housing estates, offices and communities are purchasing goods and services that maximize their sense of security. Thugs are emerging as parallel security agents people go to enforce their rights, collect debts and adjudicate contentious matters. The full spectrum of public security has been left to God – only God can protect fully, they say. Nigeria is under siege from cross-border invasions and infiltrations especially from Chad – a tiny impoverished state that would not have dared Nigeria 20 years ago. 
Under Goodluck Jonathan, the essential freedoms of association, respect for the courts, the right to compete for office, the right to vote, tolerance of dissent are being taken away in calculated instalments. The right to participate freely, openly, and fully in politics and in the political process is getting abrogated by the day. 
 
There can be no better indicator of a failed state than the loss of territory and the loss of monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force within a nation. The Federal government is weak and ineffective; it has no control over much of the Northeast. Historic towns are getting captured, renamed and run by the Islamic Caliphate in the manner of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. A huge swath of Nigerians are in dire straits as refugees in Cameroon and as internally displaced persons in adjoining states. 
Nigeria is mired in this situational crisis because it has failed to address its fundamental geographical, physical and economic constraints. These constraints have given birth to internal antagonisms, mediocrity, corruption, greed and despotism. The Middle Belt is increasingly battling inter-communal tensions between indigenous farmers and Fulani herdsmen as exemplified by the Ombatse clashes. 
The rulers can continue to deceive themselves but indicators are jarring. Where are Nigeria’s public institutions? In what state is public education and public health? Public facilities, where available, are decrepit and neglected. Nigerians have slowly realized the state has abandoned them to their own devices and to the forces of nature. The country’s brightest and best continues to find safe havens abroad using their talents to develop their host countries. 
 
With Mr. Jonathan at the helm, a privileged few is enjoying unparalleled economic opportunity, never witnessed in the history of Nigeria. The subsidy cabal are buying private jets and living large on the backs of the poor. The security mafia are profiting from terror. The militants are happy one of their own is milking the cow. Oil thieves are richer than the government. Everyone around the Jonathan oligarchy grow richer while the less fortunate Nigerians starve. 
Subsisting energy and power generation deficits have shown that the wellbeing and personal prosperity of Nigerians is never considered. Instead, the government ensures immense profits for its cronies by granting regulatory advantages and the privilege of making real money when everything else is falling apart is confined to friends of government. 
Without a shred of doubt, venal corruption is now on a destructive scale as opposed to the lubricating corruption we have come to accept as normal. Twenty billion dollars disappeared without consequence. Kickbacks are a given on anything that can be put to tender. Project contracts are awarded not as a necessity but arranged to maximize the rent they generate. 
As a capstone, we are seeing the emergence of state-sanctioned extortion – examples are the sham immigration recruitment exercise and the NYSC N4,000 pay-as-you-deploy Ponzi scheme. As expected, none of these “gains” are ever invested in Nigeria, making the economic failure of the country much more acute. This year, Nigerians have spent billions buying up the choicest properties lining the famed streets of London. To the “connected”, the Boko Haram scourge is another opportunity. Millions of dollars have exchanged hands from the inflated security budgets with no tangible improvement in security. The monies have gone into paying for lavish homes, extensive overseas travel with bloated entourage, and privileges and perquisites that feeds their greed. The rot has enveloped the top military hierarchy. It is so bad that American military consultants could not work with them, share intelligence or provide munitions. 
 
Top military brass are now emergency defence contractors purchasing substandard military wares and pocketing money meant for welfare packages for their troops. 
The prevailing situation and agitation for autonomous control at the National Conference can only show us that Nigeria has lost the “mandate of heaven.” It is a shame that under a minority Ijaw, whose land drives Nigerias’ fortune, the country lost its capacity to secure itself. More effort is spent by Jonathan and his minions on crippling states governed by opposition political parties than on real governance. 
Nigeria has earned the distinction as a textbook case of how a nation-state can move from a strong one to a weak one, then to a collapsing entity and eventually to a failed nation. At independence, Nigeria had promise and it was strong. It became weak after the political crisis in the Western region and moved progressively south until the civil war turned it into a collapsed state. 
 
Due to robust determination and committed intervention, Nigeria recovered and became a weak state. Even though the country has the resources to be strong, its extractive rulers kept it weak until external and internal forces exploited the fault lines. 
Nigeria has shown that failure is preventable. The country failed because human agency did not address at root the nation’s structural flaws and institutional insufficiencies. The combined factors of increasing demographic pressures, group grievance, severe brain drain, escalating rate of internally displaced persons, uneven economic development, poverty and economic decline, state delegitimization, bad public services, lack of respect for human rights and the rule of law, compromised security apparatuses and factionalized elites do not bode well for Nigeria. 
 
Will Nigeria collapse? I don’t know! I have hope that this country can be rescued. Obligate parasites must know they die with their host. If they kill Nigeria, they won’t be alive to tell the story.

Wole Shoyinka writes: from Chibok With Love

Perhaps #Humanists should pause from time to time and ask themselves a simple, straightforward, even neighbourly question: what do religionists really want? Not what they worship –  that is beyond rational comprehension for many but – what do they really seek? After all, society is built on the practical, unavoidable principle of co-existence. 
If this proposed exercise appears strange, it is perhaps because society is very much in denial, afraid to confront such a focused question lest it receive an answer that imposes unwanted responsibilities on the rest of its members. We prefer to take refuge in the narratives of ancient wrongs and even, sometimes legitimately, wallow in present contradictions. However, if society appears to be foundering, and along lines that clearly indicate religious factors –  the world being in no shortage of current exemplars – then it becomes a duty, even for self-preservation, to understand what the various constituent parts seek for their self-fulfilment. 
And so, to the question once again,what do religionists really want?For most, the answer is simple:  “to serve God”,  by whatever name.  That, for the larger humanity should remain unexceptionable – the devil you know is better than the one you don’t. Unfortunately, not all religionists are content with that aspiration or else – even more critically! – raise issues ofhowthey propose to fulfill such a supposedly harmless mission. 
 
 
 
 We are speaking here of a resolute, but proliferating minority who declare their objective as the right to intervene dictatorially in the rights, mores and undertakings of others – all in the name of their presiding deity. 
This claim to the privileged exercise of Control is what plagues the world in ever expanding arenas of conflict, a belief that absolute authority is invested in them by a supreme, though invisible entity, to meddle in the lives of others, not even in an advisory role, not even as provider of optional guidelines, but with an absolutism that brooks no dissent. The ambition of such religionists is nothing less than to place all of humanity under their jurisdiction. That declaration is stark, undisguised. Its brutal efforts at actualization presently infest global existence, some parts more lethally than others but,  with increasing assertiveness, including the insertion of ‘sleeper’ warriors in seemingly insulated societies. 
 
It is therefore not sufficient to decry religious extremism. The problem is best understood – and tackled – in terms of  Domination against – Freedom, thus setting aside the emotive blackmail that accompanies a condemnation of the intolerable, indeed the all-out assault on humanity by the myrmidons of religious imperialism.  Fundamentally, in spite of the prominence of schisms in the intensification of religious carnage, we should avoid distraction by the claims of one set of beliefs against another. 
 
It is certainly of academic  (historic) interest when one sect promotes the supremacy of precedence, to which a purity – and authenticity – of belief is then attached, as against later “corruption”, against which an orgy of purification is then launched. Or its reverse order – the proposition that the original Scroll of beliefs, known sometimes as Scriptures, was one of imperfection, the hidden conclusion of which has merely lain in wait in the wings, presumably to see how humans doom themselves in advance with the worship of false gods – until the emergence of Absolute Truth, ideally signaled by the appearance of a charismatic preacher. 
All these are noteworthy niceties, plus a thousand contradicting fragments and variations that pit one Sect of believers against another. They are areas of interest, often of mystification, but should never be allowed to obscure the fundamental truth as it affects the rest of us: that the conflict between Humanists and Religionists has always been one between the torch of enlightenment and the chains of enslavement. And let me state that one wishes that we were speaking merely of invisible chains. Alas, the chains we speak of are not only visible but cruelly palpable. All too often they lead directly to the gallows, to beheadings, to death under a hail of stones. In numerous parts of the world today the Scroll of Faith is indistinguishable from the Roll-call of Death. 
What humanity has reaped from these Scrolls of Faith, pulled down from nowhere in the firmament by those who have been considered sages, prophets, messiahs etc. is one that has manifested itself historically as inimical to human inclusiveness and social cohesion. 
 
 
 
Yet such Scrolls continue to be advertised as documents that deserve human adulation, treated with reverence even by non-believers. Not even though disputes over the interpretation of their tenets – and even history – such as their coming-in-being – have spilled over millennia, continue till today, and have never ceased to foment strife of an increasingly virulent nature. It is such scrolls, treasured as Infallibility made flesh,  that make the creed of humanism not only a necessary counter but a human imperative. 
We are not yet speaking our own truths to Religion or else, are failing to find a language that penetrates, in an effective way, the hearing of that minority that needs to hear them, those whose mission is to set this palpable world on fire, through adherence to a vaporous hereafter where their incendiary mission in the substantive here and now will be rewarded. Humanism requires a new tactical language, and what that language expresses requires a drastic shift in emphasis. 
 
We must take on the duty of telling the enemy openly: it is not spiritual fulfillment that you seek but – Power. Control. Power in its crudest form.  Humanism requires to develop a distinct philosophy of transformative aggression. At this moment in the lives of communities across the globe, taking note of the havoc wreaked daily by the doctrine of religious impunity, there is far too much appeasement and toleration in the language we bring to each confrontation. There comes a time when our humanity accepts that there must be an end to an attitude that is best captured in that Yoruba expression :F’itiju k’arun.Literally that means -contracting a disease through politeness. Translated yet again, this time into the fashionable language of social morbidity that mistakes sophistry for sophistication, it reads simply:Political Correctness. 
In short, we have reached a pass where, paradoxically, tolerance is far more pernicious than intolerance.  Far worse than both however is avoidance! An avoidance of socially uncomfortable issues, once the claims and sensibilities of religion are invoked, the timorous avoidance of that crucial avenue of socialized co-existence known variously as discussion, debate, discourse etc. – even argument –  an avoidance that dooms the very enthronement of civilized norms of interaction, while opening thoroughfares of blood and destruction. 
 
 
 
For those of us who consider a bruising encounter with the mere weaponry of words and ideas infinitely preferable to the massacres that come suddenly upon community, infinitely preferable to the slaughter of innocents, often by the most degrading means, preferable to the mutilation of humanity in the name of whatever god or goddesses are invoked in the act, the subject of Religion is one that must be brought openly to the table with other national and global concerns – poverty, social welfare, corruption, shelter, soil erosion, hunger, disease, environmental degradation and all other societal mandates. 
We are living in a world, it seems, where it is not only possible, but is considered virtuous by some to abduct two hundred girl pupils from a sanctuary of learning in the name of religion and the world is rendered impotent. We are reduced to pious incantations such as “These aggressors are not true followers of the faith.  Our faith does not sanction killings, abductions, sectarian targeting or, the designation of other humans as infidels and thus, as disposable material in the promotion of Faith.” 
 
 
 
We have to ask such leadership penitents: were there times that you kept silent when such states of mind – overt or disguised – were seeding the grounds of fanaticism around you?  Are you vicariously liable? When the present conflagrations were mere embers – did you, either by direct pronouncement or eloquent silence – fan those embers?  Did you at the time tacitly spread the cloak of impunity for atrocities, once the divine right of Faith defence is invoked? Most crucially, is your perception of the world we all inhabit one that exists under your total jurisdiction? These are not rhetorical questions, but questions directed at the stubborn arrogance of faith attestation towards secular conviction, in the course of which co-existence becomes a laughable indulgence in contradictions. All these have become thelivedquestions in my part of the world – let others critically consider whether or not they are also pertinent to their own societies. 
So when I am asked, what on earth is happening in your nation, Nigeria, I can only refer such puzzled questioners to my BBC Reith Lectures, “Climate of Fear”, which makes the question, more accurately – What is happening inyourworld?  In those lectures, I warn that those who claim jurisdiction over the world under the banner of Faith will discover, sooner or later, that they have merely spawned yet others who will lay claim to a superior dedication to that faith over and above their predecessors. They proceed to supplant their mentors with their greater capability for instilling fear – and not merely fear among “infidels” but even more over their original mentors. 
This is the lesson that is being implanted today by the bloodiest strain of islamism – Boko Haram – that the world has known in recent times – if it is ever possible to expunge the memory of the Algerian experience! The lesson of Boko Haram is not for any one nation. It is not for the African continent alone. The world should wake up to the fact that the menace is borderless, aggressive, and unconscionable. Take note of their primary acts when the religious insurgents first swept into Northern Mali. Study the history of Boko Haram in its zones of operation since it first reared its head in Nigeria nearly a decade ago.  ISIS is primarily about Power, religion its mere stalking horse. 
 
 
 
In ever expanding regions of the world, human existence has turned brutish – at best, precarious and nightmarish, punctuated by horrors that appear to presage the very end of humanity and those values that attempt to define it. Through isolated acts of sudden and arbitrary violence, the world is being programmed to accept as due, collective punishment, any assaults on humanity as legitimate response to real, imagined, or purposely designated slights on religion an disrespect to its avatars – assaults that take place thousands of miles away from where the crime was allegedly committed. New generations will grow up regarding such exactions as the norm, while zombies walk among us, primed for any crime against humanity when the religious chord is twanged. The world ofPolitical Correctnesslies prostrate, contrite, in the face of offences that are not even of their own making. 
So, what should be our response to such aggression? Each event must dictate its own methodology of response, but a basic rule is – certainly not a response that fails to take cognizance of the dynamic world context in which we exist.  Certainly not a response that fails to challenge the arrogance of religious imperialism, and also redresses the permissive laxities of the past. We need to deploy a new language whose message is:the world is not your jurisdiction. 
 
 
 
Each time some wound to religious sensibilities is used to unleash terror on innocent communities, the obvious response should be:  invade and inundate that space with the very material that is alleged to have given offence.  An aerial bombardment with weapons of the mind – invade that space through whatever medium of transmission is feasible. If textual – pages, chapters, illustrations, word clusters floating in space, descending on church steeples, minarets, schools, farms, factories, prisons, markets and barracks, floating down on the pompous, hypocritical chambers where self-designated theologians order the arrest, torture, imprisonment, decapitations and hangings of those alleged to be enemies of an unseen deity. 
Rain down leaflets on the Sambisa forests, where our children are presently held under conditions of extreme degradation and trauma, rain down leaflets that re-programme minds fallen victim of doctrinal abuse by religion. Prove even deeper the wounds of insecurity already gouged in the self-esteem of gloating, arrogant, seemingly crazed abductors – and their allies everywhere – who dance their mockery of the world on video. 
 
It goes beyond Chibok and Sambisa Forest.  The ultimate purpose remains paramount: to dent the sanctimonious self-righteousness of those who question our right to volition and human dignity. Collectively, we must irradiate the enclaves of religious atavism with humane alternatives, new vistas of the world, new insights into history, new propositions of human relationships – of gender, race, beliefs, classes and identities. 
Above all, however – ACT!  That imperative is upon us, will it or not.  Act in a resolute manner that demonstrates that humanity is not so supine that it will absorb obscene affronts to its defining right of dignified existence.

Traditional institution, bedrock of Nigeria’s democracy —Ozekhome

BENIN—HUMAN rights #activist, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, has said that the nation’s traditional institution was the secret behind the level of development the country had attained so far. 
He said that the nation’s democracy would have crumbled but for the solid traditional institution which, according to him, had been able to curtail the excesses of overzealous politicians. 
 
Speaking to newsmen in Benin shortly after completing the ceremonies and rituals that now make him a palace chief in Benin Kingdom, Ozekhome who attributed his success to the media and commended what he described as the fatherly role being played in the country by the Oba of Benin, said: “I Feel exhilarated and elated. 
 
This is what Chinua Achebe will call growing like a yam tendril in the rainy season. I am grateful to the Oba of Benin Kingdom, Oba Erediauwa, for giving me this honour, a non-Bini person, deeming me worthy not just to be a son and scion of Benin Kingdom but to be a high chief and belong to the highest group in Benin Kingdom that represents the Oba anywhere in the world as an ambassador. 
“I will continuously remain grateful to our traditional institution because without traditional rulers such as our Oba of Benin, we don’t know where Nigeria would have been today.
