Developed in partnership with virtual-reality-headset darling (and pending Facebook acquisition) Oculus, the Gear VR connects to Samsung's Galaxy Note 4, which the company says creates "an entirely new mobile category."<br /> <br /> Marketing hyperbole off the starboard bow! First of all, the Gear VR—which will be sold for an unspecified price—uses the Galaxy Note 4's 5.7-inch high-res screen for its VR capabilities, requiring you to actually snap the smartphone into the headset. That's all well and good, but as soon as you upgrade your phone the Gear VR seems like it'll just be another piece of expensive plastic that no longer fits the latest and greatest.<br /> <br /> Samsung's also attempting to woo consumers to the virtual side by partnering with a number of major names in software and entertainment to provide VR content. The list includes Cirque du Soleil, DreamWorks, Harmonix, Vevo, and Marvel, which will let Gear VR users explore Tony Stark's lab ahead of next year's sure-to-be-blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron. But most of the partners' ventures sound more like marketing gimmicks or proofs of concept than actual, useful applications.<br /> <br /> That said, Samsung is also making available an Oculus Mobile software development kit, letting developers create their own apps that take advantage of the interface. But the limited availability of hardware and small market niche means that there probably won't be rampant development in that space quite yet.<br /> <br /> To demonstrate its commitment to VR, Samsung also gave a sneak peek at a second device, called Project Beyond. It's a disc about the size of a medium-sized plate that contains "16 1" HD cameras that can capture a 360-degree view of a location and either store it or stream it live to someone wearing a Gear VR. It doesn't, however, record audio, which may lessen the feeling of actually "being there" and Gizmodo's Sean Hollister, who got to try it out at Samsung's conference, called it "abnormally grainy and ... a little bit awkward."<br /> <br /> Project Beyond Samsung<br /> Project Beyond is even less far along than Gear VR: Samsung says it's "not a product, but one of our many exciting projects currently under development." But if you snag a Gear VR, you'll be able to use it to view footage Samsung has captured with the 360-degree camera.<br /> <br /> Despite these announcements, virtual reality seems like it's still rooted strongly in the stuff of science-fiction rather than the practicality of the here and now. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> In his new book, ‘We Are All #Journalists Now – Africa in the Age of Social Media’, noted journalist, author, award winning investigative reporter, media researcher and now media adviser to former Governor of Lagos State and now foremost national opposition leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Mr Sunday Dare, examines the emergence, evolution and implications of the phenomenon of citizen journalism in Nigeria.<br /> <br /> Based on an academic research at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Oxford University, this stimulating work published by Visual Image, Lagos, in March his year and which covers 108 pages comprising five chapters, critically interrogates the impact of the phenomenal expansion in the mediums and use of social media platforms on the state, society and in particular the media profession in Nigeria. This offering combines the rigour of scholarly research with the accessibility of lucid prose.<br /> <br /> What has been the implication for the practice of journalism in Nigeria of the emergence of such on-line mediums as Facebook, Twitter, text messages, You Tube that provide opportunities for millions of Nigerians to become ‘Citizen Journalists’ reporting and disseminating news, images and ideas about themselves as well as issues and events around them to a mass audience? Has this development broken what can be describes as the professional authoritarianism/dictatorship of the traditional, mainstream media, which once enjoyed the monopoly of determining what constitutes news and in what form it is disseminated? What are the implications of Citizen Journalism for the democratic process and how has it empowered the weak or impacted governance? These are some of the questions that Dare seeks answers to through an exhaustive study of the operations of the path-breaking and unorthodox on-line medium, Sahara Reporters.<br /> After examining the research questions and objectives of the study in the first chapter, the author goes in the second to undertake a racy but informative overview of the origin and trajectory of the Nigerian media from the colonial period through the various post-independence civilian and military regimes to the present dispensation.<br /> <br /> Examining the implications within the Nigerian context of such electronic modes as mobile phones, Facebook, blogs, Wikipedia, Twitter and You Tube, he compares the present scenario to the previous one in which newspapers, magazines, periodicals, radio and television were the sole and dominant sources of news and opinions.<br /> <br /> In the preceding era, letters to the editor, opinion pieces published at the pleasure of the editor as right of reply as well as revenue-driven advert placements and commercials were the major avenues for audience participation in the media process.<br /> Dare defines Citizen Journalism as “the kind of journalism in which the users or audience create content online rather than wait to be fed by the traditional media outlets”. It is a process whereby an individual plays “an active role in the process of collecting, reporting, analysing and disseminating news and information”. As a result of this development, he argues, millions of citizen journalists no longer constitute a passive and receptive audience.<br /> <br /> Rather, they are defining and writing ‘the first drafts of history by themselves’. Nigerians are thus part of a global process through which millions of ordinary citizens are being empowered by revolutionary technological innovations to set and communicate the news agenda.<br /> In chapter three, Dare X-rays the evolution of social media in Nigeria from the age of emails and emailing lists to discussion fora through social media networks. He notes that from an internet penetration level of just 0.1 per cent in the late 1990s, internet usage in Nigeria had exploded to 16.1 per cent of the population. Quoting figures from the International Telecommunication Union, the author put internet figures in Nigeria at 43, 982, 200 or 28.9% as at 2010. Similarly mobile technology has become the seventh mass information medium after film, television, radio, print and sound recording. From this general overview of the growth of citizen journalism in Nigeria, Dare moves on in the next chapter to the main focus of the book, which is a detailed case study of the rise and consolidation of Sahara Reporters as posing the pioneering challenge to the hegemonic dominance of the mainstream, traditional media<br /> <br /> The book offers a detailed study of the conceptualisation, editorial structure, modus operandi, agenda, funding as well as business model of Sahara Reporters and its journey since inception. The medium was established in 2006 and modelled fully as a citizen journalism site. It describes as a unique organisation made up of ordinary citizens rather than professional journalists but who are committed “to seek truth and publish it without fear or favour”. One of its main aims is to aggressively seek to expose corruption through ordinary citizens who act as its reporters and foot soldiers.<br /> <br /> Seventy per cent of Sahara Reporter’s content is news, 10 per cent opinion and 20% User Generated Content.<br /> Dare interrogates to what extent Sahara Reporters has set the agenda for political and social discourse in Nigeria and how effectively it has achieved its objective of exposing corruption and subjecting power wielders to closer scrutiny. One of its dramatic achievements was Sahara Reporter’s role in putting the Governor James Ibori corruption saga on the front burner and contributing significantly to his extradition, trial and eventual conviction in the United Kingdom. Between 2006 and 2010, Sahara Reporters produced 104 news items and investigative reports on the Ibori corruption scandal.<br /> The last chapter in which Dare interrogates the relationship between citizen journalism and the traditional media is easily the most insightful and thought provoking. Some of the advantages of citizen journalism he points out include immediacy of reporting, speed, minimal start- up capital and its greater vigour and audacity in investigative reporting. Indeed, Sahara Reporters claims it emerged to fill an investigative void created by the conservatism of the traditional media, which OmoyeleSowore claims had itself become a power bloc. Due to citizen journalism, the world including Nigeria can now benefit from the flow of news without boundaries or frontiers.<br /> <br /> However, the flipside Dare notes is that citizen journalism is faced with serious professional gate keeping issues including deciding news fit or unfit to publish, little concern for ethical constraints and scant regard for objectivity, fairness and accuracy in news gathering and information dissemination. In the final analysis he argues, the relationship between citizen journalism and the traditional media can be complementary rather than antagonistic.<br /> <br /> While citizen journalism can challenge the mainstream media to be more transparent, innovative and investigative, the former can learn from the traditional media’s better gatekeeping, factual checking and more matured news presentation. He submits that collaboration between the mainstream media and citizen journalism can lead to better journalism in the interest of the public good.</div>

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <img height="154" src="https://scontent-b-ams.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/10426553_660782700702287_7422176571500743881_n.jpg?oh=0e068098fa133f63fc6793c5eab7e9a4&oe=54E70E66" width="200" /><br /> The Minister of #Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Tuesday in Abuja said Nigeria must plan differently in order to generate non-oil based revenues.<br /> Speaking at the ongoing Public Affairs Forum, Ms. Okonjo-Iweala said the present administration is working towards developing infrastructure and roads for businesses to strive.<br /> <br /> “We must help the businesses in setting up, in the sectors, in manufacturing, in agriculture, in other sectors; we must have that so that we can have the non-oil base to task,” Ms. Okonjo-Iweala said.<br /> She also said that the present administration has been able to get a lot out of Nigeria’s non-oil revenue; in agriculture and other sectors.<br /> <br /> Ms. Okonjo-Iweala said Nigeria’s borrowing has reduced drastically since 2010 when Goodluck Jonathan’s became president.<br /> “By 2010, we borrowed N1.3 trillion to help finance our spending.<br /> “We have brought it down from N1.3 trillion to N571 billion and we will continue to take it down even if it is by N1, we will continue trending down.<br /> “Of course, the cost of debt is still high because of what we borrowed in the past,” she said.<br /> She said the President Jonathan administration’s policy is to keep Nigeria’s borrowing going down by being prudent in expenditures and also realizing additional sources of revenue.<br /> “We are too dependent on oil, I said it at my ministerial platform and now we all see that the price of oil is coming down, the quantity are also not as large as they used to be,” she said.<br /> <br /> Also speaking at the forum, the Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen, said the administration improved federal roads from 4, 500 kilometres of roads in 2011 to 25, 000km in December 2013 out 35, 000km of federal highways in Nigeria.<br /> He said over 70 per cent of Nigerian road networks are motorable especially when compared to about 16 per cent at the inception of the present administration.</div>

While the Police and other law-enforcementagents tried their best, a major flaw existed: there was simply no law that captures cybercrime and prescribes punishment for cyber criminals.<br /> <br /> It was this that prompted many interest groups in the ICT arena to clamour for a cyber crime law to regulate activities in the sector as well as to take care of the criminally-minded.<br /> Only recently, the Senate passed the long-awaited Cyber Crime Bill into law.<br /> It would be recalled that in the past 10 years, several bills on cybercrime had been pushed to the National Assembly by the Nigerian Information Technology experts, but none scaled through the final reading on the floor of the Senate.<br /> Many of the bills did not even get a mention, but recently, one of the bills eventually passed through the final reading and was approved by Senate, a development that has drawn commendations from ICT professionals in the country.<br /> In 2011, Senator Gbenga Kaka (APC, Ogun East) had presented a bill to stop cybercrime. But the bill came under controversy due to a section related to social media.<br /> <br /> In January, President Goodluck Jonathan in the bill titled, “Cybercrime Bill, 2013”, which was routed through the Senate President, David Mark, had urged members of the upper legislative chamber to consider its enactment into law.</div>

Louis home by thousands of venomous #spiders that fell from the ceiling and oozed from the walls.<br /> Brian and Susan Trost bought the $450,000 home overlooking two golf holes at Whitmoor Country Club in Weldon Spring in October 2007 and soon afterward started seeing brown recluse spiders everywhere, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Once when showering, Susan Trost dodged a spider as it fell from the ceiling and washed down the drain.<img src="https://scontent-a-mxp.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/v/t1.0-9/1654134_647752975338593_1917135091270380315_n.jpg?oh=5a092383946293d48f1b6658aff3d1de&oe=54ED1DBE" /><br /> <br /> <br /> She told St. Louis television station KMOV-TV in 2012 the spiders “started bleeding out of the walls,” and at least two pest control companies were unable to eradicate the infestation.<br /> The couple filed a claim in 2008 with their insurance company, State Farm, and a lawsuit against the home’s previous owners for not disclosing the brown recluse problem.<br /> At a civil trial in St. Charles County in October 2011, University of Kansas biology professor Jamel Sandidge – considered one of the nation’s leading brown recluse researchers – estimated there were between 4,500 and 6,000 spiders in the home. Making matters worse, he said, those calculations were made in the winter when the spiders are least active.<br /> The jury awarded the couple slightly more than $472,000, but the former owners declared bankruptcy, the insurance company still didn’t pay anything and the couple moved out two years ago.<br /> The home, now owned by the Federal National Mortgage Association, was covered with nine tarps this week and workers filled it with a gas that permeated the walls to kill the spiders and their eggs.<br /> “There’ll be nothing alive in there after this,” said Tim McCarthy, president of the company hired to fix the problem once and for all.</div>

They’re difficult to remember - especially now that it’s recommended that you have a different, extremely complex one for every website you log into - and frighteningly easy to hack, so we need a better way to keep our data under wraps.<br /> <br /> A US-based design company called Bionym partnered with identification technology experts, Brivo Labs, to create the Nymi bracelet. This wearable device uses your unique cardiac rhythm, or ‘heartwave pattern’, to act like a form of identification so only you can unlock your online accounts.<br /> <br />  The bracelet has been designed to work with computers, and the team is also working on getting it to interact with physical doors in an effort to do away with keys and swipe cards forever.<br /> “Your heartbeat is consistent, which makes it different from an iris or fingerprint which needs to be scanned. This makes it a frictionless form of identification, since you don’t need to stop to be verified,” Lee Odess, general manager at Brivo Labs, told Elizabeth  Segran from Fast Company. “It’s not just about a signing in. It’s about bringing attributes about yourself so that you can have a curated experience.”<br /> <br /> According to Segran,the device works by emitting a Bluetooth signal to identify the wearer based on their heartwave patterns, and computers, doors and gates fitted with matching Brivo Labs software will be activated. The team is also looking at integrating the device into other aspects of our everyday lives, such as turning on lights and activating our cars. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <br /> <div style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"> Nigeria’s target of zero #HIV/AIDS, Zero discrimination by 2015 is still way off the mark considering the <img src="https://scontent-b-cdg.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/s180x540/10659175_653045224809368_2152898767690292886_n.jpg?oh=6f0742c7c8db21a6a3597a4481961771&oe=54B0438B" />hitches in its national response, which is mainly fund.</div> <br /> <br /> Less than two months to the  celebration of World AIDS Day, marked globally every December 1st, Nigeria may not have a positive score card to show.<br /> The reason being the miserable  conditions of people living with HIV/AIDS, as well as the high number of people dying daily from AIDS-related complications due to lack of access to anti-retroviral drugs.<br /> <br /> It is no longer news that Nigeria  has the second highest HIV burden in the world with 3.4 million Nigerians living with HIV.<br /> The Director General, National  Agency for the Control of AIDS(NACA), Prof John Idoko, said that only 642,000 HIV positive persons out of the 1.6 million people requiring treatment, are currently accessing anti retroviral drugs, which represents only 30 per cent of the national need.<br /> The Network of People Living with  HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWAN) has raised the alarm over their plight.<br /> <br /> The national coordinator of the  association, Mr Edward Ogenyi, said the death rate of people living with HIV/AIDS is on the increase because government has not owned the process.<br /> <br /> The assistant national secretary,  Kano State chapter of the association, Hadiza Jibrin added that some of the members are complaining that they are asked to pay N1500 to get tested for HIV at private clinics.<br /> She said, “The reason is because  those test kits are been supplied through donors. Now that the donors are withdrawing and pulling their funds out of the country, it means that private hospitals will have to source for funds and buy these test kits by themselves. Because they are profit making organisations, they are charging people to pay for HIV tests.”<br /> <br /> According to her, “ If test for HIV  continues at N1000 and N1500, then we are far from ending the HIV epidemic in this country. It is major barrier that will not allow people to have access to treatment.”<br /> She added that that no state is  exempted from this problem as all the 36 states, including the FCT, are having one problem or the other.<br /> <br /> “Remember we are talking about  sustainability; the international partners have come with their open mind to help us. From the point of enrolment, they will tell you that the treatment is for life. We are taking it on a daily basis. So it would be out of place to wake up one day and see that these donors are nowhere to be found again. From the various states we all represent here, the donors are telling us that they are leaving; and by the time they leave us, what will our government do?”<br /> danglingReport, however, noted that they  shouldn’t be blamed for having the HIV virus.<br /> President Goodluck Jonathan had  launched with fanfare last year, July 2013, the President’s Comprehensive Response Plan(PCRP) for HIV/AIDS,   which was to be implemented with N140 billion.<br /> <br /> The PCRP aims to avail 80 million  Nigerians the knowledge of their HIV status; enrol an additional 600,000 eligible adults and children on ART; provide ART for 244,000 HIV pregnant for prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT), provide access to combination prevention services for 500,000 most at risk populations (MARPs).<br /> <br /> Speaking to journalists recently in  Abuja, the national coordinator of the association, Mr Edward Ogenyi, wondered how many people will die of HIV/AIDS before the Finance ministry released fund for the implementation of the PCRP for HIV/AIDS which was designed to urgently bridge the existing service access gaps for HIV/AIDS.<br /> “Madam Minister, this is an SOS.  Save our women, our new born babies and our generation from HIV/AIDS. We are tired of mourning and burying our members. Development starts with human beings,” he said<br /> <br /> .<br /> Also, the national public relations  officer of the association, Samaila Garba, urged the federal government to stand up to its responsibility.<br /> He said from 2004 up till date, HIV  programme in the country has been donor driven which had contributed to a lot of success, but now that the finances have dwindled, they can no longer access HIV services”<br /> <br /> “The question is, who are the  people that will do these services? Are they saying people living with HIV/AIDS should come and pay when 80 per cent of our members cannot afford these investigations because of the cost?. Mind you, the drugs we are given are very toxic.”</div>

A cell transplant has enabled a paralysed man to walk again.

Following the transplant, he began to regain feeling in his legs. He steadily continued on the road to recovery, and two years after the operation, he can now walk again with the aid of a frame.<br /> <br /> The transplant was a world-first collaboration effort by surgeons at the Wroclaw University Hospital in Poland and scientists at University College London’s Institute of Neurology in the UK, and the findings are published in the journal Cell  Transplantation .<br /> The cells that were used to achieve this miracle were taken from Fidyka's olfactory bulb, the structure that gives us our sense of smell. These nerve cells are continually damaged due to the different odours we smell and must be replaced regularly, which means the olfactory bulb is a very rich source of olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) - specialist cells that form part of the sense of smell.<br /> <br /> OECs provide the pathway for the damaged fibres in our nose to grow back, enabling nerve cells to regenerate themselves throughout our lifetime. The team used this unique regeneration quality to repair Fidyka's damaged spinal column cells.<br /> Using these cells for the transplant meant there was no danger of rejection, and eliminated the need for immunosuppressive drugs that are typically used in transplants.<br /> Professor Geoffrey Raisman, a spinal cord injury specialist at University College London’s Institute of Neurology, who led the research, told Cahal Milmo from  The  Independent,"I believe this is the first time that a patient has been able to regenerate severed long spinal nerve fibres across an injury and resume movement and feeling".<br /> <br /> The technique involved first removing one of Fidyka's olfactory bulbs, and culturing it in the laboratory to generate about 500,000 OECs. The OECs were then transplanted into the damaged area in his spinal cord. His incredible recovery suggests that the OECs provided a pathway for the fibres around the injury to rejoin, by creating a “nerve bridge” between the damaged ends of the spinal cord.<br /> <br /> This regeneration reopened communication pathways between his brain controlling muscles and his lower body.<br /> "What the procedure does is provide a bridge that enables cut nerve fibres to grow across a gap. The cells open up a door on either side of the broken tissue and create a pathway for the nerves to follow,” Raisman told Richard Hartley- Parkinson from Metro.<br /> The team plans to assess the technique in more patients over the next few years, and hopes that it could be a future treatment for patients with spinal cord injuries.<br /> <br /> Raisman told Milmo from  The  Independent, “We believe that this procedure is the breakthrough which, as it is further developed, will result in a historic change in the currently hopeless outlook for people disabled by spinal cord injury."<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div> </div>

The generator is made from molybdenum disulphide (MoS2), which is a clear, flexible and extremely light material that opens up huge possibilities for the future of electricity generation.<br /> <br /> The new electrical generator is an example of piezoelectricity, or electricity that’s generated from pressure. Piezoelectric materials have huge potential to be used to create materials that can charge devices, such as footwear that powers an iPod. But until now, scientists have struggled to make these materials thin and flexible enough to be practical.<br /> <br /> However, it’s been predicted that a substance capable of forming single-atom-thick molecules, or two-dimensional layers, would be highly piezoelectric.<br /> Now the scientists have proved that this is the case for the first time ever. Their results have been published in Nature.<br /> <br /> To test whether MoS2 would be piezoelectric on the atomic scale, the team flaked off extremely thin layers of MoS2 onto a flexible substrate with electrical contact.<br /> Because of the way these flakes were created, each had a slightly different number of layers - for example, while some were just one-atom-thick, others were eight-atoms-thick.<br /> <br /> The scientists tested the piezoelectric response of these flakes by stretching the material, and measuring the flow of electrons into an external circuit.<br /> Interestingly, they discovered that when the material had an odd number of layers, it generated electricity when stretched. But when it had an even number of layers, there was no current generated.<br /> <br /> A single one-atom-thick layer of the material was able to generate 15 millivolts of electricity when stretched.<br /> They also found that as the number of layers increased, the amount of current generated decreased, until eventually the material got too thick and stopped producing any electricity at all.<br /> <br /> Computational studies suggest that this is because the atomic layers all have random orientations, and they eventually cancel each other out.<br /> The research team also arranged these one-atom-thick layers of MoS2 into arrays, and found that together they were capable of generating a large amount of electricity.<br /> <br /> <br /> This suggests that they’re a promising candidate for powering nano electronics, and could be used to create wearable technologies.<br /> “This material – just a single layer of atoms – could be made as a wearable device, perhaps integrated into clothing, to convert energy from your body movement to electricity and power wearable sensors or medical devices, or perhaps supply enough energy to charge your cell phone in your pocket,” said James Hone, professor of mechanical engineering at Columbia engineering and co-leader of the research, in a press release.<img src="https://scontent-a-cdg.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/14987_653501971430360_6880627214293626599_n.jpg?oh=fdcbec19a54af028cc6d24195ad49dd2&oe=54E4B7B5" /></div>

Health, intelligence and behaviour measures were taken periodically on all participants, most recently at the age of 38.<br /> The scientists warned that there may be other explanations for their findings and that they could not "definitively attest to whether this association [between persistent cannabis use and IQ decline] was causal". The study did rule out factors such as years of education, schizophrenia, hard-drug and alcohol dependence, but did not account for other relevant factors such as childhood trauma.<br /> <br /> A study published in PNASsix months after the original research questioned the methodology, saying: "Although it would be too strong to say that the results have been discredited, the methodology is flawed and the causal inference drawn from the results premature."<br /> The researchers argued that if you take into account the effects of socioeconomic status on IQ, the decline in IQ due to cannabis use is overestimated by the previous study - and could in fact be zero.<br /> A new study by the University College  London has now shed further light on the Duke University findings. This study drew on a larger sample of adolescents; 2,612 UK children born between 1991 and 1992. They found that heavy cannabis use was in no way linked to IQ decline, although alcohol use was strongly correlated with IQ loss in eight to 15 year olds.<br /> There was some evidence that cannabis use impacted school test scores: the heaviest users scored 3 per cent lower on exams at age 16.<br /> <br /> This mirrors other research, which has linked heavy marijuana use to poor academic performance and low  school completion  ratesin teenagers.<br /> However, a new study in California where cannabis was recently legalised show that legalising the drug leads to  no increase in problematic adolescent behavioursuch as crime, drug overdose, driving under the influence, or school dropout rates. However, only 10 percent of those products end up as whisky, the remaining 90 percent is wasted during distilling. These waste products are either released into the sea or turned into animal feed.<br /> <br /> <br /> Celtic Renewables Ltdis a start-up company in Scotland that is working to reuse the waste products from the Scottish Malt Whisky industry to develop biobutanol - an advanced biofuel that can be used instead of fossil-derived fuel. This will in turn reduce oil consumption and CO2 emissions, and provide an energy guarantee for rural areas that have a booming whisky industry.<br /> The team have refined an old industrial fermentation technique, and managed to change draff (husk residue left by fermented grains) and pot ale (liquid produced during the mashing process), into 1-butanol and ethanol - which can both be used as fuel.<br /> <br /> Biobutanol has many benefits over bioethanol, which is commonly used as a biofuel. It has 25 percent more energy per unit volume and a lower vapour pressure, making it safer to store and handle. Another bonus is that it can be easily blended with petrol or diesel in storage tanks or retail station pumps, eliminating the need for modification in blending facilities.<br /> The whisky industry annually produces 1,600 million litres of pot ale and 500,000 tonnes of draff from the distilling process, but Celtic Renewables' current biobutanol facilities are small-scale and unable to process this much waste.<br /> <br /> The team hopes to get sufficient funding to allow them to establish a commercial plant, where they can revive this age-old fermentation technique to develop the fuel for our future.<img src="https://scontent-b-cdg.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/10346598_656344147812809_103854656657707947_n.jpg?oh=b2a2b17aaafaa2ba6db65b87ca9cf126&oe=54F26BB1" /></div>
